How to use @MiddleBack in SSJS (doesn't work as described)

The function @MiddleBack in SSJS doesn't work as described in the help.

For example, @MiddleBack(myString,0,-6) won't return the last 6 characters of myString.
Instead, I need to use @MiddleBack(myString,6,6).


Is there a way to work with substrings: @MiddleBack(myString,startString,EndString)? If so, what is the correct usage? (the usage documented in the help does not work)
